Districts in Area 30

What is a District?

A District is a geographical division within an Area, State or Province, that provides an opportunity for the groups in that vicinity to have a voice in matters affecting other groups and A.A. as a whole. A general service conference delegate comes from an area. In Massachusetts there are two areas -- the Eastern MA Area (Area 30) and the Western MA Area (Area 31).

Each District has a District Committee that is made up of representatives from its many AA groups. These representatives are called General Service Representatives or G.S.R.s. Each group may elect a G.S.R. who will attend the District meetings and Area assemblies in order to represent the group and vote the group’s conscience. The District Committee elects a representative — a District Committee Member, or D.C.M., who is an experienced G.S.R., to serve as an essential link between the group G.S.R. and the Area Delegate. As a member of the area committee, the D.C.M. is able to pass on the District’s thinking to the delegate and the committee.

What is an Area Committee?

The Eastern Massachusetts Area Committee consists of eight Area Officers, D.C.M.'s from 26 geographically defined districts and two Spanish districts, seven Conference and three Standing Committees. The area committee is responsible for the health of the conference structure and thus for growth and harmony in the A.A. fellowship. The Area Committee meets monthly and hears reports and proposals which may be presented to the Area Assembly.

What is an Area 30 Assembly?

An Area 30 Assembly is any meeting of area G.S.R.'s and the Area Committee. Voting members of the Assembly are all currently serving G.S.R.'s (or alternates) and all members of the Area Committee. Among other things, the Area Assembly hears reports from Area Officers and takes action on proposals presented The Area Assembly meets five times a year. The area assembly is the mainspring of the Conference structure - the democratic voice of the movement expressing itself. Assemblies are the responsibility of the area committee, and are conducted by its chairperson.
