Bill and Lois Wilson Join The Oxford Group

Following Bill W.’s spiritual awakening at Towns Hospital (late 1934), he and wife Lois join the Oxford Group — a nondenominational movement whose tenets are based on the “Four Absolutes” of honesty, purity, unselfishness, and love — and begin to attend meetings at Calvary House, behind Manhattan’s Calvary Episcopal Church there, Bill is inspired by the charismatic rector Rev. Dr. Samuel Shoemaker (below), who emphasizes one-on-one sharing and guidance.
Reverend Dr. Samuel Shoemaker
Bill W. said this spiritual experience lifted his depression and allowed him to stop drinking alcohol. Bill effectively underwent what was to become Steps Four, Five, Six, Seven, and Eight of the 12 Steps.
"Don't pray to escape trouble. Don't pray to be comfortable in your emotions. Pray to do the will of God in every situation. Nothing else is worth praying for." — Dr. Samuel Shoemaker, Oxford Group Leader.
